Here are some fun summer events with the Chicago Headline Club, the professional SPJ chapter in our area. SPJ DePaul members should feel free to attend, participate and volunteer in any of these events. They are some great networking opportunities:
Fundraiser to benefit unemployed, underemployed journalists
July 1: Starting at 8 p.m., journalist-musicians will entertain at the Heartland Café, 7000 N. Glenwood Ave., to raise funds to help unemployed and underemployed journalists enhance skills for today’s job market. The Chicago Headline Club is hosting the benefit to raise money that will be used to fund training and freelance assignments. ‘
Donation: $10; $5 with student ID. We’ll pass the hat for the musicians. Hear some great tunes and find out how you might be able to tap into those funds! Come up on stage if you want to play! To participate, e-mail Steve Franklin at stevebey@live.com. We already have commitments from Mary Schmich, Chicago Tribune columnist, and John Adkins, formerly of the Trib, who will perform with Curtis Black, who writes for the Community Media Workshop but who also makes his living as a jazz musician. We also have a folk group lined up.
Benefit to fill Headline Club Foundation
Aug. 15: The Headline Club’s annual honoring of Les Brownlee, its late president, with a party-picnic in the afternoon at the home he shared with his wife, Priscilla Ruth MacDougal, at 537 Judson St., Evanston. Party will be held 2 to 8 p.m. Suggested donation: $20, half-price for students. Contributions will go to the Chicago Headline Club Foundation.
